Review of Beginners (2011) by Mandy C — 31 Dec 2011
It's really such a good movie to start of my 2012 year. Beginners is like an unpolished gem, which is rare and pure and have a huge potential to shine once nicely cut and polished. The film really toy with human's dark side with a dash of humour, emotions as well as life experiences.
To begin with I love how the movie is being presented, with a mixture of stills and good naration, and how the director cleverly overlap the three period of life together. Beginners proves that great movies need no action pack, great setting, beautiful cloths and even fancy car. A simple setting, great script, strong and powerful cast, nice concept and storyline is good enough to bring the movie alive.
As much as I think this movie is remarkable and Christopher Plummer really gives this movie a great depth and adds loads of layers to the movie, this movie might not appeal to the mass as the topic and it's slow pace setting will only appeal to niche market.
This memorable quote from this movie really summarize the movie well, "I don't want to just be theoretically gay. I want to do something about it." And I believe Beginners did just enough to make a mark.
