Review of Beginners (2011) by Charlie S — 27 Jan 2012
Beginners is a coming of age tale for both a 30-something son and his 75 year old father. It's told in a disjointed narrative/flashback style which works most of the time. It almost seems like the whole film is a memory with strange edits and jump cuts - but again, they work most of the time.
And also, Beginners was written by Mike Mills who based it off of his own father, coming out as a gay man when he was 75. It works. But unfortunately it's almost too close to relate to. It's such a personal film, that it's hard for it to let the audience in.
There are some very genuine touching moments, but I feel it would have had more of an impact if the director took a couple steps away from the story to allow us to go through the experience with him, instead of watching it happen.
