Review of Beginners (2011) by Patricia G — 05 Mar 2012
A consciously cute and quirky film, that occasionally gets bogged down by slow but unengaging scenes. Ewan plays Oliver with a beautiful vulnerability that cries out desperately for a connection. Any connection.
One of the highlights in the movie is none other than Arthur, the Jack Russel terrier, that emotes in subtitles. Too cute. Christoper Plummer is also excellent as a 75 year old father that's arrived late in the gay scene with a new lease on life.
Overall, stylistically competent but lacks the heart to go with it.
