Review of Beginners (2011) by Jerry K — 14 Mar 2012
I can only assume that the Academy Award went to Christopher Plummer because he is aging and doesn't have one yet because this film does not really utilize him in a great acting capacity at all. The film was a bit slow but well shot.
The camera was always in the right spot to give the atmosphere a standout vibe, if you will. But the story was weak and under-developed, and I found myself not all that invested in the characters, which is a phenomenon that really bugs me when I see a movie.
Mary Page Keller was the highlight of the entire piece, in my opinion. She was the parent I'd probably be if I had kids, and her performance was spot-on. Granted, NO ONE did a bad job in this film.
I think the story just didn't do much for me. The main thing that comes to mind about this film, once again, is: under-developed.
