Review of Beginners (2011) by Gavin A — 08 Apr 2012
Excellent and lovely movie. There's a certain honesty and heartfelt nature to the story, most likely because Mike Mills had a similar experience of having his dad come out after his mother's death.
And this is really where the movie shines, the way the relationship is explored between father and son and the troubles they go through. Don't get me wrong, the romance stuff is just as good but the movie tries to connect Oliver's life and his experiences growing up to all his relationships falling apart.
And I think they do a good job of getting that across, though it's not great. The acting is excellent, Ewan McGregor is really underrated as an actor I've decided...he has an incredibly expressive face that can, and this will sound like a cliche, say more than words.
The woman who plays Anna, her name escapes me, is incredible charming as well. Christopher Plummer is also excellent. As far as acting goes, there are really now flaws here. The rest movie isn't perfect but it's still a great movie.
