Review of Beginners (2011) by Melissa H — 24 Jun 2012
I enjoyed its unique form of storytelling & I very much enjoyed Christopher Plummer in this role. I wish the film was more about him though..I wasn't entirely drawn in by Oliver's tale. It was sort of an interesting study of "nurture" however & how one is affected in their adult life by the way they were raised & nurtured by their parents.
He was slightly pathetic though, & the woman he was with was no help to him either. They both had their own issues to work out individually before they could be in a healthy substantial relationship together.
They really brought each other down & you felt this sort of gloom & depression watching them together (at least as they settled in together.) The ending sort of got you nowhere & it seems that the couple will be going around in circles.
That they will have to "begin" again.
