Review of Beginners (2011) by Heidi Y — 04 Aug 2012
Quirky, but melancholy, Beginners is an exploration of life and relationships and the difficulties of navigating them, and while the scenarios may not be universally relatable, the themes should resonate no matter who you are.
The overall tone of the movie may be a little too somber for some, but the eccentric script evens it out to make for a very enjoyable experience. The movie is well-cast, and all the actors put in a great performance, so that even characters that could've easily been one-dimensional feel nuanced and sympathetic.
Overall, the film reminds viewers that no one is ever truly ready for all of the challenges life throws at you, but like the title implies, it's never too late to start trying.
