Review of Beginners (2011) by Parker S — 16 Aug 2012
Beginners could have opted out for a simple rom com and still would have been good fun with Ewan McGregor's inherent like-ability, but it instead tried to make it as clever, unique and lively as possible.
And the director succeeded! Beginners is an intimate, touching and masterful look into deep and tough topics like love, death and relationships. Like I said earlier, Ewan is a great actor. Not only is he very amiable, but he also can act with true honesty.
Sometimes you see actors and actresses over empathize their emotions because they don't have the skill or perhaps not the determination to subtly display what their characters are feelings, but McGregor doesn't have a problem with it.
Melanie Laurent is equally as alluring as is Oliver's gay dad played by the charming Christopher Plummer. Its not only a thoughtful character study and a lovely romance, but it also has clear and concise lessons for the audience.
