Review of Beginners (2011) by Ryan P — 03 Jan 2013
Caught in 2 minds! I'm not sure whether I liked it or hated it. Very beautiful at times, with some great dialogues and especially the narration, which was full of charm and wit -- but also extremely mundane in other parts, specifically the McGregor/ Laurent relationship, which didn't feel authentic.
Maybe it was the nonlinear storytelling that put me off. It's either a brilliant, realistic film about love, loss and starting anew, or the cure for insomnia. Christopher Plummer won Oscar in a supporting role for his performance as the father who comes out the closet after the death of his wife.
A subtle, greatly executed piece of acting, although I felt there was definitely some wasted potential with his character. I should probably watch this again to make up my mind, but I'm reluctant to.
