Review of Beginners (2011) by Grant H — 07 Jul 2013
Why is Ewan McGregor not more acknowledged as an actor? I find him so charming and funny everytime I see him and he almost got rid of his Scottish accent by now.
Anyways, he's one of my favourite. So is Christopher Plummer (giving another great performance as McGregor's late gay father). Enough reason for me to watch Beginners.
The beginning of a relationship, reliving childhood memories and the last days of a gay father interweave in a sweet and funny film. The flashbacks are a bit irritating sometimes but all in all the transitions are very smooth and original.
Beginners also benefits from a great screenplay with enough wit and tragedy to truly become engaged with the story and the characters.
PS: Oliver (McGregor) goes to a costume party as Freud - how cool is that?
