Review of Beginners (2011) by Myron A — 09 Jul 2013
Very well done, well written. I didn't expect all the sadness, but it's got a captivating story. It should be an eye-opener for many. It isn't often that the consequences of discrimination and the later-life expressions of sexuality are portrayed in film.
Christopher Plummer is a treat to see in a role like this. Also, I love watching Ewan and Laurent interact. Their relationship is nuanced but without ever feeling tiresome or gimmicky. This movie is less about proving a point or shoving a message down your throat, and more about the exploration and analysis of an interesting story from an interesting perspective.
