Review of Beginners (2011) by Rick Groen for The Globe and Mail (Toronto) — 15 Jun 2011
Ultimately, the result is identical to Mills's debut effort in "Thumbsucker." Once again, clever insight vies with misty-eyed sentimentality, honesty with artifice, real humour with bogus gravity, the genuinely affecting with the merely quirky.
But "Thumbsucker" was at least a promising start; Beginners is just a frustrating continuation.
