Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by Lenny D — 17 Aug 2009
The story is told in a broken narrative, an effective way for the plot to unravel, however it takes away dramatic tension out of central dilemma. The movie is quite depressing but yet I can't take my eyes off of it.
Thanks to first rate performance from Hoffman and Hawke as well as Lumet's understanding of human psychology, desperation. Great premise for a crime-drama film that achieves what it sets out to do.
A beautiful Greek tragedy. May you be in heaven 30 minutes...before the devil knows you're dead.
