I feel like the writer was working out her own personal family issues in a self-flagellating allegory of her kin. There is a lot of things I didn't like about it and a few things that I did like. First, Hoffman and Ethan Hawk were both terrific actors.
Hoffman as the slick talking devil and Evan as the insecure weakling. The whole flash back sequences weren't really needed to further the story and besides Hoffman and Hawk there weren't many more interesting characters.
The sex scenes are awesome. That always gets a thumbs up from me. Really depressing downward spiral type of movie; OK concept, OK Execution. You don't need to watch it.
