Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by Ray H — 22 Jun 2013
The story moves at a ponderous pace during the initial act. However, the characterization and the establishment of key relationships during this time more than make up for it. The latter half is executed with such ferocity that is felt more emotionally given the attachment to these characters.
The strong script is managed through very successful performances by Hoffman, Hawke, Tomei and Finney. It is unsettling how the greed of one individual can involve and destroy the lives of many. With that in mind, this movie plays as a pessimistic critique on the overall human condition, whilst being centered on a microcosm of society, With that in mind, it is simply delightful to invest into this movie and watch everything unfold.
