Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by Hari A — 04 Oct 2012
"May you be in heaven half an hour, before the devil knows you are dead". Sidney Lumet presents a stunning thriller complete with an epic cast and mind blowing performances by everyone involved. Brothers Andy Hanson (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Hank Hanson (Ethan Hawke) cook up a plan to rob their parents' jewellery store. Insurance would take care of the parents, and the brothers would get the much needed money to fix their plummeting lives. But, the robbery goes terribly wrong, and consequently their whole life starts falling apart.
Philip Seymour Hoffman and Albert Finney as his father are simply at the top of their games. Ethan Hawke's work is also commendable but Hoffman's and Finney's performances overshadow Hawke's. One of the best part of the movie is also its editing. Random jumps to various time frames and scenes in the movie keeps you on your toes. And finally, all the editing patches up to a stunning climax.
Glorious.
