Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by Manny C — 16 Apr 2010
This film is tremendously depressing, on the level of Shakespeare's bleakest tragedies. There is a feeling of inescapable fate winding its way through the film's narrative as the fabric of family is unraveled in the worst possible ways.
I must commend the actors on their performances for making these characters so unlikable. The script wends its way back and forth through time and leaves us guessing as to motivations and reactions. The only positive to this film is Marisa Tomei's frequent nakedness.
Lumet's direction is controlled and impressive. I "enjoyed" this film, I guess. I would rate it higher, but it's just so damn depressing.
