Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by Kapil D — 22 Jun 2009
This movie is awesome. Philip Seymour Hoffman, I got to say, is turning out to be one of the best and top notch talent of our times. Ethan Hawke yet again shows that with a great script and role, he can give spectacular life to a movie. And the supporting cast is equally showy - Albert Finney and Marisa Tomei..great.
Sidney Lumet's last film in his 80s, captures such nuanced performances detailing family issues and morality that shocks in conclusion. I do not agree to its non-linear (which is perfectly fine) story telling on the robbery, yet I can appreciate the vision for putting it all together at its finale.
Woody Allen had his own take on the premise in Cassandra's Dream (okay movie), which appears more truthful and linear, but still missed the mark overall. "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead", is a fine one and will be remembered as one of Lumet's great works.
