Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by M D — 13 Jul 2009
It's re-assuring to know that while the cinema screens are usually full of wise cracking robots, endless animated sequels and predictable romantic comedies there are still some film makers out there making honest, intelligent cinema and true drama.
Before the Devil knows you're dead is such a film, with a great central story, interesting themes and crafted in such a way that is different and very watchable. The characters are all well crafted, and the situations feel real enough, and they are acted out by a cast made up of some really talented individuals.
Hawke does his usual routine, and is good at it, Tomei delivers another great performance and is surprisingly hot throughout, Albert Finney doesn't need to do much to be sublime and here he plays his part excellently, and then we have Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
To my mind there is no actor in the world right now as utterly watchable and deeply convincing as him, in whatever role he plays. He is no different here, stealing scenes and being the driving force of the story.
Frankly, if any film has Hoffman in it, it's worth watching. This film is a much needed change from the usual, and should be sought out by any who like good drama and proper cinema.
