Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by Vadim S — 05 Dec 2009
I didn't expect less from the Master behind several of the very best films in History, like The Fugitive Kind, 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon or Serpico. Before the Devil knows you're Dead is just flawless and full of superb cinematic aspects.
This is a Director's film of course, but, it is an actor's film as well. Mr. Lumet is so brilliant that he allowed his cast to shine and glow in a way that very few directors can. Ethan Hawke is perhaps the one who stole the film; he's always been amazing, but here, he showed a vulnerability that was needed for his character in a way that only the greatest ones can; he's an actor's actor.
Philip Seymor Hoffman is brilliant as the older brother with an empty life, and Marisa Tomei is so beautiful and so talented that I am very glad to realize that she's back in the game; she deserves it.
The plot was the result of a brilliant mind, and the way Mr. Lumet developed it makes it just so very perfect. Before the Devil knows you're Dead is such a superb film that you must see before you're dead for sure.
Per-fec-tion.
