Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by Bill B — 03 Apr 2011
Gave this one a re-watch, had to dial down my gushing 1st impressions, but this is a really great film that holds up on repeated viewings.
A superbly structured film, I was shocked to realize that Sidney Lumet was in his 80's when he made this film. The narrative techniques feel like those of a much younger man.
The complex framing that the film uses, interweaving short vignettes of all the various characters lives at different times around the central event of a jewelry heist is very well done. It slowly builds the characters and their motivations up, teasing the viewer along with small details here and there until the full ramifications of their actions become clear.
Recommended.
