Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by Tara A — 09 Oct 2011
Sidney Lumet is a true master of cinema, and the fact that he directed this film at the age of 82 is remarkable. That being said, it's not his best work, but a great effort. I typically don't like Ethan Hawke, but he plays his role very well here.
I typically love Philip Seymour Hoffman, but I'm not a fan of his character here, although his acting is great (as always). The story gets a bit ridiculous near the end, but I love that the robbery isn't quite the focal point of the film, but rather the circumstances and relationships are.
I love the score as well; that oboe is downright HAUNTING. Flawed, but pretty damn good.
