Review of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) by A.j. A — 27 Feb 2012
Sidney Lumet is a very talented director and this was his very last film and it is an excellent film to finish off a career with. The plot is basic, two brothers are both having lots of money problems and personal problems and Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman) has figured out a way to fix those money problems. The plan is simple. Hank (Ethan Hawke) robs their parents jewelry store. Both brothers worked at the store and they know the layout, the combination and when the most jewelry and money will be in the store. Andy will then fence the goods and the insurance will take care of their parents. Naturally, every thing that can go wrong does go wrong.
The story follows the two brothers and the father at various points before the robbery and after the robbery as their family problems, money problems and personal problems all start catching up with them.
Philip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant in this movie. He is a man on the brink of collapse and throughout the movie he begins his free fall in a most spectacular manner. I strongly recommend this movie!
