Review of Before Sunset (2004) by Calvin C — 01 Jun 2013
Nine years after the events in Before Sunrise, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy return in this solid sequel. Whereas the first one took place in a day, this basically is told in real time as Jesse is in Paris on a book tour. Celine lives in Paris and the two meet up. Only having a short time before he needs to leave on a plane, the pair take a walk around the city and catch up. Just like old friends, we too are curious how their lives turned up in those 9 years. There is very little romance since Jesse is married with a child. So the film is just two old friends catching up. They're a little older and wiser, but it's like they have never left. It's a follow-up that feels natural and we see how the two have lived their lives since that fateful day on the train. The ending is ambiguous and I like how it leaves things open.
Grade: A-.
