Review of Before Sunrise (1995) by Matt W — 31 Mar 2014
An honest and truly romantic movie.
Although the film can feel a little slow, it is very effective in creating a believable chemistry, and growing romance between the two leads. There are some one take scenes that are truly wonderful to watch, especially a scene that simply lets the two characters talk for about 10 minutes, as they take the tram through Vienna.
The camera never cuts, and you believe every second of it.
Subtlety is one of the driving forces in the film, as with each scene you start to notice little things, such as Ethan Hawke slowing getting closer to Julie Delpy as one scene goes on.
I think this film will put some off, as it is basically a day in the life of two people who meet and 'fall in love'. But this is all it is. It is a collection of conversations, and it studies almost the art of falling in love, instead of the complications that surround it.
It is a study of what romance is, while still being an utterly romantic... romance.
The performances are great, and the script is witty. Even if it may feel a little long, there is no denying that this is a great romance.
