Review of Before Sunrise (1995) by Joe G — 03 Jun 2013
Storytelling doesn't get any simpler than this: a French mademoiselle meets an American guy on a train, and before he catches a plane back to the States the next day they spend the night wandering through the streets of Vienna together. They share some interesting, heady, only occasionally pretentious conversation about themselves, life and death, and everything in-between. It's a welcome approach to the boy-meets-girl scenario in which we actually see their relationship unfold in front of our eyes, enough that I would like to see them meet again in the next chapter. I finally watched this 18-year-old film during the same week I later learned the third part Before Midnight came out in theaters, an extraordinary coincidence that both Jesse and Celine would appreciate.
"See, um, I kinda think that love is an escape for people who don't know how to be alone.".
