Review of Before Sunrise (1995) by Alex M — 04 Nov 2013
Before Sunrise is screenplay perfection. Seriously, though; two people simply talking for an hour and a half could easily make for one of the most boring films ever, yet what is here is nothing but engaging and mesmerizing.
From their very first exchange, I knew something was very special about Jesse and Celine's relationship. Hawke and Delpy's chemistry is simply on fire throughout the film, with delivery so natural that you'll get lost in their banter.
To add on to that, Vienna is a beautiful city with plenty of little attractions, and it's lovely to just watch them explore the city with few interruptions. Really, though, the shining star here is the script and its actors; there's no fluff or plot twists or anything to come in between Jesse and Celine's budding relationship - it's one of the best romantic films of the past several decades, and a beautiful character study of one of the most interesting couples in film history.
Don't miss it.
