Review of Before Sunrise (1995) by Briain D — 27 Dec 2013
Set and shot in beautiful Vienna, Before Sunrise is a strong romantic drama that displays a glorious chemistry between the two characters and tells a love story in the most passionate sense. Well acted, Before Sunrise is written in a way that we, as viewers, can connect with the characters in such a real way that we can find the faults and annoying habits (but also the glorious and beautiful things) in them that we would really find in our partners.
This effect is down to, in no small part, the acting of Hawke and Delpy, but also hugely thanks to the writing and smooth direction of Linklater. Unlike so many romantic films, which focus far too much on extremely sentimental and melodramatic scenes, designed to cause tears and passionate reactions, Before Sunrise is much more natural.
Background music is kept to a minimum (both a positive and negative point, in my opinion) and there is virtually no interruption by outside characters (with a few effective exceptions), so we can purely focus on the two leads, their relationship and just go with it and see how we feel.
It's genuinely interesting filmmaking and I eagerly await seeing the two sequels.
