Review of Before Sunrise (1995) by Grant S — 26 Aug 2014
OK, but not great. Put off watching this because it looked a common-or-garden romantic drama. However the 8/10 average rating on IMDB made me think there is more to this than that. Turns out: not really.
Is pretty much another romantic drama. Better than most in that it has more depth of characters, has a fairly unique and beautiful setting, and direction and plot are more subtle and original than most. On the down side, some of the dialogue is incredibly pretentious, navel-gazing crap.
Reasonably good performances from Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, even though I found Hawke's character a bit irritating.
For a much better crafting of a theme of strangers who become close friends yet know they must soon part, never to see each other again, see Lost in Translation.
