Review of Before Night Falls (2000) by Connie T — 11 Sep 2007
An artist's dream in colors and textures and music. I adore the sound track. The sufferings of Arenas and of the Cuban people are vivid, as are their joys--the irony of Arenas "escaping" to America and still suffering from being a social outcast and dying of AIDS is arresting.
Life in American seems dull in comparison to life in Cuba, and freedom feels overrated. Sean Penn's role is just weird. Maybe my most favorite movie ever.
