Review of Before Night Falls (2000) by Greg M — 09 Dec 2007
This was very good for the most part, but it almost loses steam in the last act. The film is about Reinaldo Arenas, a Cuban writer who faces repression and censorship in his native country. After he is jailed, he goes to New York to continue his writings.
Javier Bardem boasts an inspiring character and the film is beautifully photographed. The last part when he gets to New York isn't quite as strong as the rest of the film, but still manages to stay intriguing despite it becoming a film with too many familier elements from other pictures.
It's a good strong film that manages to stay interesting and engaging despite being quite long. Check it out if you like good films about real people.
