Review of Before Night Falls (2000) by Olivier D — 11 Feb 2008
Coming back from a concert Saturday night, we found this DVD close to the TV set. For some reason, I hadn't heard about it. We started watching the movie at 1am and, of course, I fell asleep half through it. However, the first thing I did the next day was to see the end of it.
Bardem is amazing as always. Julian Schnabel (or his cinematographer?) has an indeniable style, but story-telling is very confusing. You don't always understand what happens, why, or the chronology. The importance of Reinaldo Arenas as an author outside of Cuba is under stated. Depp's cameo only brings star power. Who is this cross-dresser officer that appears 2 minutes? Why is Arenas released? A lot of questions are unanswered.
