Review of Before Night Falls (2000) by Jordan S — 10 May 2008
Lemme just say that I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Its actually amazing.... Bardem is brilliant, Depp does drag! (don't forget Sean Penn) I think this film internally juxtaposes the queer gaze against other parts of the film, this is best embodied when Arenas has to deport Cuba, and convince the officials that he was in fact gay, he had to "lie" to embody a fictional queer self, in order the tell the truth, that he is in fact gay.
...this was absolutely fascinating to me...also that straight people actually miss this happening!
