Review of Before Night Falls (2000) by Charlotte B — 16 Oct 2010
Julian Schnabel's portrait of Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas is both an energetic refutation of typical biopic slickness and an exercise in indie film miserabilia. Bardem gives a phenomenal performance, though, and does justice to a man unselfishly devoted to free expression - from carving his words into trees as a schoolboy to his consistent baiting of the Castro regime's leftist blind spots.
