Review of Before Midnight (2013) by Facebook U — 06 Apr 2015
I still remember the first time I watched Before Sunrise, I fell in love with both characters and the idea of it. I was young at that time and had my own distant relationships in the past, I was a lost hope and a romantic thinking that the story in the movie is exactly what will end up happening to me. The ending in that film made me feel empty and sad but in a tragic way because it is always sad to say goodbye specially when you think you have met your soul mate and for reasons beyond your control you can not be with them.
Then I watched Before Sunset and it made me happy, the ending left us with a possible hope for both characters. It was like the will it happen? Would it be so bad if he ends up staying with her and leaving his wife? Surely that is the wrong thing to do? You just don't know what is wrong and what is right yet you feel happy because after their first meeting they finally got the chance to see each other again and would you really let go of your first ever love again?
Before Midnight is a sad story. It is sad because it probably relates to most relationships of today. In the first films you have hope, happiness, innocent love, being together forever moments and what not. This movie is grown up, it is reality and you can tell from the body language from the beginning of the film that this won't be a sweet romantic day like their last two films. This is the truth, they are now parents and have gone past the 'honeymoon' phase which we all do. I grew up as a kid thinking people end up together forever because my grandparents had been married for so many years, my parents too and so were most if not all my family and I had that idea in my head that romance never dies and that if you meet your soul mate and the one that makes your heart melt then surely nothing can go wrong. This movie makes you realise that all that is an innocent young persons thinking and it hurts. It is such a great film, one that made me feel so sad inside afterword but yet again left me with some hope that they would work things out possibly. The saddest part is that they will never feel the same way they did when they first met, or when they met again and no matter how hard they will try that will always be a memory. It is just the sad truth about life, we all go through it and we all go past it. Once again Ethan and Julie were immense, the conversations flow and you feel like you are with them through out the movie just like the last two, You forget that these two people are acting and once they have that fight your heart breaks and you know and feel what is coming, the memories of the first two films come crushing down and you realise that the truth, real life, is not such a nice place after all.
