Review of Before Midnight (2013) by Edwin P — 10 Jan 2014
One word: Amazing. Simply Amazing.
The film showcases the art of conversation and a masterful third film in the series after "Before Sunrise" (**** 1/2) and "Before Sunset" (*****). Those who have seen the first two will know what to expect.
It is now almost two decades since Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) met. They are in their middle ages and now parents to twins. Hawke and Delpy play their characters well with the just right amount of chemistry.
The film is broken down into a handful of 15 - 20 minute conversational episodes. These conversation pieces take them through a wide range of subjects including their trials and tribulations, career choices, regrets, love, marriage and sacrifices, among others. Infused with the just the right amount of subtle humor, it presents both the gender sides of the argument while taking that very delicate step of staying in the middle and not taking sides as to who is right or wrong.
The writing credits are shared by Linklater, Hawke and Delpy and all three rightfully captures this particular stage in a couple's life. If there is one takeaway from the film, it would be that going through life with someone will always not be perfect. But honesty and openness is one way to get through those trying times.
