Review of Before Midnight (2013) by Drew S — 13 Feb 2015
Richard Linklater has made three of the most honest films about love. Before Sunrise talks about the joy of being in a relationship. While Before Sunset talks about reconnecting and living in the moment.
With Before Midnight, it talks about the difficulties of being in a relationship. Jesse and Celine, wonderfully played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, have greatly matured since their first encounter on the train to Vienna.
They are in their forties, and their love life doesn't seem to be going where they expected. They both express their fears and hopes about the present and future so raw that it seems like we're watching a real couple.
When Jesse and Celine take part in the most brutal argument I've ever seen in a movie, they become capable of not being happy together all the time. Topping off with the gorgeous Greek scenery, this is the best film in the series.
I hope Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy make another "Before..." movie where we see the couple in their fifties.
