Review of Before I Wake (2016) by Richard D — 30 Oct 2018
Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane have lost their young son and they take in foster child Jacob Tremblay. They are remarkably incurious about the fact that his previous two placements have not worked out for vague and unspecified reasons.
He's a really nice little boy, and everyone's very happy ... and then they realize that his dreams materialize while he sleeps. Luckily for them, you can load up his dreams like a jukebox. They show him pictures of their dead son, and their son reappears at night .
.. because apparently this kid dreams about whatever he sees during the day (and he quite luckily doesn't have undramatic dreams about doing homework or walking to school.) Eventually his dreams start to turn sinister because the plot requires it.
This film is an okay idea very badly realized. Even if you accept the basic premise, it still makes no sense. The plot is sketchy and jumps around in odd ways characters are introduced that contribute nothing to the plot and unceremoniously dropped with no warning.
Things happen that are pretty important, but the characters never speak to each other about them.
