Review of Before I Wake (2016) by Shawn R — 07 May 2017
Not much more than a "filler thriller" (a film that brings nothing new to a genre and shocks us with things seen time and time again), it's resonant of the stronger Andrés Muschietti effort Mama and also Ole Bornedal's The Possession with use of fluttering bugs and omnipresent antagonists, Before I Wake attempts to probe dreams to deliver a horror story.
Whilst it does have its fair share of genuinely creepy moments and also features a good driving force with modern horror guru Mike Flanagan, it's a disappointing effort overall and just reminds me of the far superior Insidious that Before I Wake boorishly attempts to imitate.
