Review of Before I Go to Sleep (2014) by Greg B — 03 Nov 2014
"Before I go to sleep" is a psychological thriller starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth about a woman (Kidman) who loses her short-term memory every time she goes to sleep. Playing off of the concept of "50 first dates," this movie explores the psychological element of a woman's quest to unlock the secret behind her past and her condition.
Kidman is extremely convincing in this role, and I consider her one of our finest actresses. Her performance in this movie gives me goose bumps and makes me want to see her Oscar-winning performance in "The Hours.
" The movie is very captivating and held together by the bravado of the leads, especially Kidman. There is a sense of foreboding throughout the film, and while some of the twists are predictable, some actually surprised me.
I thought this movie was a creative effort overall. However, I did find the plot somewhat contrived, and parts of the script felt more forced than they needed to be. This is on the whole a solid film if it didn't try to be certain things it's not in parts ----------------------------------------- B.
