Review of Before I Fall (2017) by Jon C — 05 Mar 2017
Finally a role that makes way for Zoey Deutch to break out on her own.
It's such a moving performance from a familiar concept we know.
This is pretty much Groundhog Day for teenagers and Edge of Tomorrow but it's never had this amount of emotion and thinking-power behind it all.
Based on the YA novel it focuses on a young girl and her friends, they're about to graduate high school and they want to end things on a high note but one night while driving they get into an accident and Samantha then wakes up the next morning as if the whole thing was a dream.
But alas, she is reliving the same day over and over again and she has to find a way to break the cycle or be trapped forever.
Director Ry Russo-Young unexpectedly tackles the bullying epidemic in a few spots and that time is precious to us all; we can either bathe in it, don't have enough of it or all we have is time.
It's important for all of us to use each day wisely not just for ourselves but for others.
The film is effectively moody, angsty, heartfelt, and full of food-for-thought.
You also find out how much hurt everyone is holding deep inside.
If the other supporting characters had more development then it would've been more appreciative.
But Zoey Deutch is the focus of the film trying to change each decision before the day is truly over.
I like her, the setting, the premise if overly-familiar, the acting, and the feelings it stirs up deep inside.
A YA adaption that wont make people sulk, that's a breath of fresh air.
