Review of Before I Fall (2017) by Divina P — 12 Apr 2017
I'm not sure why this rating is so low. This was a really good movie that isn't your typical YA adaptation. There's a subtle complexity and maybe people can't appreciate the layers that aren't in your face.
This movie is an emotional and psychological journey that Zoey Deutch does so well as Samantha Kingston. Deutch is so strong in this role, but nothing about her performance is showy, instead multiple realities that she portrays through the six days that she relives. Everyday revealing a new truth about herself and those around her. How what you do effects those around you, and how you have the power to change and become who you truly want to be despite the world and people surrounding you.
The fact that Ry-Russo Young shot this movie in 24 days is amazing and to shoot the same scenes multiple times, but have each one vary in tone, color, lighting, etc, to serve Samantha's psychological journey to enlightenment without it feeling too repetitive, but still engaging and entertaining should also be appreciated. I'm a bit upset that this movie has such a low rating. There's a powerful message in this film. I hope it finds a larger audience and more people are willing to fall for it as I did.
