Once upon a time, before he discovered Johnny Depp, Burton's favourite actor was Michael Keaton. This film is a sweet memory of the time when Tim Burton was discovering his own style, identifying himself in the Hollywood scene.

Unfortunately, just like Burton's Batman movies, Beetlejuice is all style and no substance. Even though his character is the film's title, Keaton is only a supporting actor in this beautifully empty satire.

More than anything, Keaton's energetic (actually psychotic) and sophisticated performance makes him the great scene stealer, in spite of some beautiful performances from Baldwin and Davis. This is the point where Tim Burton is making the roof of the colorful house that is his unique style.
