Review of Bee Season (2005) by David U — 31 Aug 2006
Bee Season (2005) - "Do you see what I see?" - Miriam.
Eliza Nauman (Flora Cross) first gains the attention of her brother, and then her father as she progresses through the preliminary school, local and regional contests on her way to the National Spelling Bee. Unfortunately, her mother Miriam (Juliette Binoche) could not be reached - Mom is busy with a project to make her life whole again.
Bee Season is a simple, elegant, and mystical adaptation of Myla Goldberg's story of a family sailing down the lonely river of ritual, the chill breeze of intelligence at their backs, and the waterfall dead ahead. Oblivious dad Saul (Richard Gere) is busy tending the gardens of young minds, son Aaron (Max Minghella) is desperately searching for an escape, Mom is trapped deep inside her own world, and the daughter, Eliza, is communing with God.
As powerful as "Sixth Sense" and as crazy as "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," Bee Season will be most appreciated by those of us with the dangerous habit of thinking about things too much.
