Review of Bee Movie (2007) by Forrest P — 17 Nov 2009
When I heard about all of the celebrity voices that were due to appear in this film, I got rather excited. Jerry Seinfeld? Renée Zellweger? Matthew Broderick? John Goodman?? Chris Rock?? Kathy Bates?!?
However, I was quickly let down as I realized that this film was relying *waaaay* too heavily on celebrity appearances to sell this film. That and the fact that this film borrowed everything from past animated animal films we've seen before. Including A Bug's Life and Antz (one of my all time favorite animated film).
What I really hated about this film was that there was absolutely nothing creative about it. Nothing. Perhaps the most creative portion of the film was when the bees sued the human race. But, didn't the whole "disrupting the balance of nature" idea seem familiar? Like wasn't there a movie about a king lion that included that?
The animation was nothing too look at, especially if you're use to Pixar or most of Dreamworks other animated films.
Some of the action and chase sequences were way too over-the-top. Especially the climax, which started to annoy me when it didn't end after the first 5 minutes of watching it.
And then we have our voice actors. They were kind of entertaining. At first. And then I got tired of listening to them, especially when they were giving us lines from that hackneyed screenplay.
I will admit that the celebrity voices were fun to listen to (for about 2 minutes) and that I did chuckle merrily a couple times (emphasis on "couple"), but everything else about this movie was either stolen, over-the-top, or annoying. Or all three.
This movie goes on my "most-hated" list.
2/10.
