Review of Bedrooms and Hallways (1998) by Ashley T — 17 Sep 2004
Best in Show: Kevin McKidd.
One for the future: Hugo Weaving.
Stand-out scene: Childhood sweethearts sofa encounter no. 1.
Brainer or no-brainer: Brainer.
Stands up to one viewing or repeated?: Repeated.
DVD commentary any good?: n/a.
TV.
Now, I'm no homophobe, but this was a little too top heavy on the gay side for me (and that's from someone who adores every frame of Six Feet Under). Maybe it's the overt mincery from Darren (Tom Hollander) that put me off (but how come I loved Gimme Gimme Gimme?) or maybe it's seeing the likes of James Purefoy, Con O'Neill, Hugo Weaving and Kevin McKidd playing for Man City AND Man United behind the recoil but I didn't enjoy this too much. The movie opens with Leo's (McKidd) birthday party and his reluctance to spend any time with his guests is told in flashback. Hugo Weaving's role as an Estate Agent who arranges dalliances with Darren in unsold properties is little more than a cameo yet he and James Purefoy share the DVD cover, which is a little unfair on Kevin McKidd, who has the lead role (but I suppose is a virtual unknown in The States).
