Review of Bedlam (1946) by James-Masaki R — 28 Oct 2010
Producer Val Lewton's last horror film and his third and last collaboration with Boris Karloff is the best of the best. The Lewton horror films redefined horror for the 40's and the combination of the two ended on a really high note. It's just a shame that Lewton never got the respect while he lived and he died at 46 years old.
Karloff runs a mental institution in the 1700's where institutionalized people were treated like a freakshow atraction with terrible living conditions. When a young woman played by Anna Lee decides to help out by making reforms and making the institute a better place, the owner decides to entrap her and bribe officials to claim her 'mentally insane', therefore the young woman would be sent into the crazy asylum.... some sick stuff, but based on realistic conditions....
