Review of Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) by Amanda Emilie M — 21 Sep 2009
I have always had a soft spot in my heart for this movie. It's just the sort of movie where you can just forget your cares, and have a nice little smile and chuckle.
So many movies are in your face in one aspect or another- whether it's the action, romance, or special effects. This movie is understated in all of these things, and is all the more enjoyable for it. I've never had to worry about being slapped across the face with any aspect of this film.
The action isn't overblown, the humour isn't vulgar, the romance isn't melodramatic, and the movie isn't about the great advance of the Sodium Vapour Technology that Disney developed. It's all... well, almost a natural progression of the story, which makes it one of my favorite movies.
The story is done, the acting subtle, and the characters engaging. It's hard to find films like this anymore. This movie is truly from an era when movies- especially Disney movies, were made to be enjoyed... not simply to make lots of money.
I watch this movie, and I can't help but feel like a kida again... and that alone elevates it above a lot of other films.
