Review of Becoming Jane (2007) by Danis D — 29 Aug 2009
Mixed feelings about this one. I thought Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy were excellent in it and they had great chemistry. Their romance was genuinely touching, I thought. However, there's too much "life imitating art" going on for my liking.
They've basically taken scenes, characters and the combined plots of 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Sense and Sensibility' and implied that everything that happens in those books was based on Austen's real-life experiences, ignoring the fact that Austen wrote other books.
It doesn't do much to suggest that she had a sense of imagination either. My advice to anyone watching it would be to treat it as complete fantasy.
