This movie is kinda like pride & prejudice. love is an irony, when the loving two cannot be together. however, like Hathaway said in the movie that "irony is the contradiction of both things that are true".

love must be true, or it will not last forever. so the sacrifice we made is to cast away the lust of physically being together; and the reward we get is the sacred place in our hearts where this sensation of affection will be in eternity.
